Oil capacity: with filter, without filter and total fill

By Car Spec Sheet · Updated Oct 16, 2026 · Every example is checked against the owner's manual page it links to. How we work

An owner’s manual usually gives the amount of oil for an oil change, not the amount an empty engine holds. Many list two figures: one for a change that includes a new oil filter, and a slightly smaller one for a change without it. Use the figure that matches what you’re doing, and finish by checking the dipstick.

How three manuals say it

Vehicle What the manual lists Page
2017 Honda Civic Sedan, 2.0 L Change: 4.2 US qt. Change including filter: 4.4 US qt. p. 617
2022 Nissan Rogue, PR25DD engine Drain and refill with oil filter change: 5-3/8 qt. Without oil filter change: 5-1/8 qt. PDF p. 541
2021 Buick Envision Engine oil with filter: 5.3 qt (5.0 L). No separate without-filter figure. p. 326

Read the label next to the number

  • “Change” or “drain and refill” means the amount to add after draining. Some oil always stays in the engine.
  • “Including filter” or “with filter” adds the oil the new filter holds, usually a few tenths of a quart.
  • Engine matters. The 2017 Civic Sedan lists 4.4 US qt for the 2.0 L but 3.7 US qt for the 1.5 L turbo. Check which engine you have first: see Which engine and body style do I have?

Add a little less, then check

Pour in slightly less than the listed amount, run the engine briefly if your manual says to, wait, and check the dipstick. Top up to the mark. Overfilling is worse than being slightly under.

Coolant capacities work differently. Some manuals list a change amount, others the whole cooling system. The 2017 Civic’s 1.4 US gal is a change amount including what stays in the reserve tank, while the 2021 Envision’s 9.9 qt is the entire cooling system.
