CR2032 vs CR2025: what’s the difference, and can you swap them?

By Car Spec Sheet · Updated Oct 19, 2026 · Every example is checked against the owner's manual page it links to. How we work

Both are 3-volt lithium coin cells 20 mm across. The difference is thickness: a CR2032 is 3.2 mm thick and a CR2025 is 2.5 mm (the last two digits are the thickness in tenths of a millimeter). The thicker CR2032 holds more charge, so it typically lasts longer in the same device. Use the one your owner’s manual or the old battery names.

Which one does my key fob take?

In the owner’s manuals on this site, CR2032 is by far the most common key fob battery: it’s named in 729 model-year manuals, against 80 for CR2025. A few makers lean on CR2025: Nissan, for example, uses it in the 2024 Nissan Armada Intelligent Key and the 2023 Nissan Leaf, while the 2026 Nissan Rogue takes a CR2032. So the same brand can use both. Check your own model in Key fob battery by vehicle.

Can I use a CR2032 instead of a CR2025?

Usually not a good idea. The CR2032 is 0.7 mm thicker, so in a fob built for a CR2025 it can be squeezed hard or stop the case from closing properly. Going the other way, a thinner CR2025 in a CR2032 slot may not press firmly on the contacts, so the fob can work on and off. The voltage is the same, so neither will damage the fob electrically, but the fit matters. Buy the size printed on the old battery.

Tips when you change it

  • Note which side faces up before you take the old one out. Most fobs want the + side facing the cover, but follow the steps for your model, for example the Honda Accord.
  • Touch the battery by its edges; skin oil on the faces can weaken the contact.
  • Coin cells are dangerous if swallowed. Keep new and used ones away from children.
