Spark plug part numbers and gaps: reading the manual

Owner’s manuals name spark plugs in different ways: a maker’s part number (NGK, DENSO), the car maker’s own part number, or both. Use the plug listed for your engine, because different engines in the same model often take different plugs.

Several numbers can mean one plug

Gaps

Some manuals print a gap (the space between the electrodes). The 2019 Equinox lists 0.024–0.028 in for the 1.5 L and 0.030–0.035 in for the 2.0 L. Many modern plugs come pre-gapped: the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu manual says “spark plug gaps are preset by the manufacturer” and advises against re-gapping. Where a manual prints no gap, use the plug as supplied.

Spark plug changes are usually listed in the manual’s maintenance schedule; follow that interval for your engine.
